6/3 Abstract
Does scientific theory change always occur cumulatively and piecemeal, or does it sometimes happen through radical revolutions? This has been a central issue in the philosophy of science ever since Thomas Kuhn wrote The Structure of Scientific Revolutions over fifty years ago. Meanwhile, new approaches towards the study of the evolution of technology and innovation have recently been emerging from the field of complexity studies. This talk will consider how these new approaches might be used to conduct new investigations into the classic problem of scientific theory change. In particular, it will investigate the possibility of bringing recent work on the evolution of technology to bear on understanding the development of nineteenth century physics.
